Free as Your Hair

Authors Note: The song “Hair” is in my opinion, one of Lady Gaga’s best songs. It has emotion, meaning, and depth, plus, it’s pretty darn catchy. The theme of this song is individuality.

“I’ve had enough, this is my prayer, that I’ll die livin’ just as free as my hair” are just some of the many, inspirational lyrics in the song “Hair” by Lady Gaga. When talking about being as free as her hair, you know that all Lady Gaga wants, is to basically let go of whatever insecurities were holding her back. This song is all about being yourself and not letting anyone change you; and the lyrics and music are the things that sculpt this song to make it as meaningful as it is, and also making the theme individuality.
The first thing that defines the theme of this song as individuality is the line “I screamed ‘Mom and Dad why can’t I be who I want to be?’” This verse is very powerful; it shows that right now, nobody is excepting her, and even though her parents probably think they’re helping her be “normal”, letting Lady Gaga express herself could have massively helped her social life. When Lady Gaga was a child, she was constantly bullied, and it could have been because she expressed herself in different ways, than in fashion or trends, so at this point, all she wanted to do, was to be free, be herself, and be her hair.
Another verse that really shows the theme, is when Gaga says “I just wanna be free, I just wanna be me, and I want lots of friends that invite me to their parties.” Everyone wants to be themselves, and a lot of people are, and even though Lady Gaga knows that now, this was her past, so she decided to sing about it. All she ever wanted was to fit in, but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that she wanted to fit in and be herself at the same time, but Gaga was insecure then and she didn’t believe it was possible.
Finally, the last thing that defines the theme of this song as individuality is the fact that this song starts out slow, with more of a depressing, yet “to frightened to be herself” kind of vibe, but then starts to pick up tempo as Lady Gaga sings more confidently, as the song gets more and more intense. This shows how desperate she is for people to let her be herself and also how she won’t let people put her down. She shows that even though she used to try hard for people to like her, now she is just herself and lets people like her for her.
Overall, I’d say that it’s pretty easy to see why the theme is individuality, and why it is that way. “Hair” is a powerful song with an inspiring message, that message is to just be yourself and you’ll find a way to fit in, because being someone that you’re not, will never end in your favor. What starts out as a song with her singing as a dreamer, ends as a song where Lady Gaga has accomplished her goal, or as she says it, her “prayer” or being as free as her hair; she’s now herself.
