Winning a War Without Even Fighting in it

Authors note: This is a cause and effect piece I wrote about the war that happens in City Of Glass. Valentine is a horrifying man that wants to take over the only place where shadow hunters are free, so he starts the war making the Nephilim wanting to surrender.

Bodies of demons, along with a handful shadowhunters lay on the ground, as the rest of the Nephilim and Downworlders proudly walk among the streets of Alicante. The impossible has been made possible; Valentine’s army of demons has been defeated. For once, just one time in history, Nephilim, night children, warlocks, and lycanthropes got along and won the war.

Although, it was only the adults that fought, none of this would have been possible without the help of a teenage girl. When Clary suggested that everyone should get along so they have a chance at winning the war, everyone just stared at her like she was a lunatic. That didn’t matter to her though, she has a dad figure in her life that is a werewolf, and he has been there for her since she was a toddler. Clary knows that not all downworlders are bad, and most in fact, are relatively kind. She also knows that if Valentine wins, he will start by killing downworlders, then move on to people who know or like them “He doesn’t think anyone who associates with downworlders is worthy of being called Nephilim.” Once Clary says that, she knows she touched some people, but not enough.

Along with knowing her power, Clary also saw that her friends and family were watching her, and that gave her the strength to prove her point and carry on with her speech. Clary has a special power, the power to know any rune, and to even create new ones, runes that aren’t even in the gray book (the book of all runes). To get people to believe her, Clary demonstrates on herself, marking her arm with a rune that causes anyone who sees her, instead see the person they love most in the world. Once the magic slips from her grasp and she turns back into herself, everyone believes her and decides to use her talent for the war.

As a result of the Claves wise choice, Clary creates a rune that kind bind people together, even shadowhunters and downworlders, giving Nephilim the power of whatever downworlder is their partner, and the downworlders the agility and stamina of their partner. With that being said, everyone finds a partner and marks them with the rune, Clary’s rune. This gives them hope, before Clary gave her speech they all thought that they were going to surrender, but they now have a chance.

All in all, the war is over, the Nephilim beat the demons, and it’s all because of Clary. She defeated her repulsive, murderer of a father and basically one the war without even fighting in it. At first the clave was skeptical of this whole plan, but after seeing what Clary could do, the definitely made the right decision.
